Adjustment of status is a procedure that allows those who are eligible to apply and become a permanent resident of the United States without needing to go abroad and apply for an immigrant visa. One the final steps to AOS is an interview with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). What Will Be Discussed During the Interview?
Before your case is discussed, the officer will ask you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth – in other words, you'll be sweared in and placed under oath. He or she will check your photo identification and then begin reviewing your file. The officer may ask you basic questions pertaining to your address and place of birth just to ensure you are who you say you are and that your personal information hasn’t changed. You’ll also be asked to hand over the documents that prove you are eligible for a green card. If your application for the green card has to do with your employment situation, you’ll be asked a series of questions regarding your job, qualifications, and experience.
What to Bring
The notice you receive should give you a list of everything you need for your adjustment of status interview. Once you’ve gathered all the necessary information, there are other documents that may be beneficial for you to bring along.
In addition to what you’re asked to bring, you should also bring the following documents with you:
- A copy of your visa petition
- Your passport
- Original copies of any documents you submitted to USCIS
Once The Interview is Complete
If everything goes favorably, you’ll be granted approval for permanent residency and your passport will be stamped. You’ll have to wait to receive the green card until after the ADIT process. If the officer is unable to approve your status, you’ll be asked to provide any additional documents to resolve the issue and your decision of your status will be sent via mail.
